In order for the team to achieve success,each member must work toward the membership goals of FABULOUS. It takes each member’s Focus, Attitude, and Belief in our Unique organization, in tandem with membership Loyalty and performance Opportunity to create team Unity to lead to our ultimate Success.
Unity--The quality of being one in spirit, sentiment, purpose, etc.; harmony, agreement, concord; uniformity
To obtain unity, the individual team member has to recognize that the purpose and ideals of the organization revolve around the group not around the individual. While we embrace the uniqueness of each individual on the team, Unity requires conformity. Each team member must set aside her desire for personal recognition in the team setting, and realize that they are part of the whole. Success will be achieved when the group works as a unit to achieve its goals.
Opportunity--A combination of circumstances favorable for the purpose; a good chance or occasion, as to advance oneself
Opportunity is the moment in time, our performances, when we have the chance to demonstrate our talent and abilities to others.
Martha Graham, modern dance pioneer, says it best: "All that is important is this one moment in movement. Make the moment important, vital, and worth living. Do not let it slip away unnoticed and unused."
Loyalty--Faithful to those persons, ideals, etc. that one is under obligation to defend, support, or be true to
Loyalty is a personality trait that we look for and admire in our friends. Loyalty creates and maintains bonds of friendship and is integral to the success of any team or organization. Loyalty is one of the first major steps in developing the longevity of a friendship or maintaining the ideals of an organization.
Unique--Having no like or equal; unparalleled; extraordinary
Fillies is a unique organization with its own traditions. It is important to recognize our unique attributes and not compare ourselves to any other group or any other team. Every team achieves its success in its own way.
In addition to our unique team qualities, each member is unique. We often hear that there is no "I" in team, but it is important to embrace the individual abilities and individual strengths of each member. By building on each member’s unique strengths, a team is created.
The definition of believe is "to have confidence in a statement or promise [a purpose]; to have trust or confidence (in) as being true, real, good, etc. As individuals and as team members, a vested belief in both the individual member’s and the group’s purpose is vital to our success:
THE PURPOSE of the Grapevine High School Fillies Dance Team is to encourage quality performance, high academic standards, fine personal qualities, and loyal school spirit among its members. Through the development of dance technique, leadership, cooperation, self-discipline, and sportsmanship in each individual member, the Fillies will fulfill its purpose for the benefit of Grapevine High School and the GCISD community, as well as reflect credit upon the members of this organization - past, present, and future.
In our quest to earn FABULOUS, a daily positive attitude toward our teammates, practice, and performance becomes crucial to our ultimate success both as individuals and as a team. Charles Swindol states, "The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company...a church...a home...[and, in our case, a team]. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude...I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with [us]...we are in charge of our attitudes." Always look for the positive in every situation! It makes life more fun! R:-)
As Fillies, the first step in achieving Fabulous is to "FOCUS" on the task at hand. Our focus is to prepare both individually as well as a group for every practice and every performance. When each member focuses positively on the task at hand, the team is ultimately successful.
Welcome back, Fillies & Fillie Families! Summer practice is underway and performance preparations are in full swing. The team is striving to earn their "FABULOUS" title. As the team progresses through practices during the next few weeks we are also concentrating on learning the great traditions of the Grapevine Fillies: from understanding our "official" purpose to the Fillie meaning of FABULOUS!
